MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
TRANSPORTATION: We will be riding buses to and from Martin’s Cove with a stop at Little America for fuel and bathroom breaks. We encourage youth and leaders to sleep on the journey to Martin’s Cove. Once we arrive, there will be activities to do until 10:00 that night so sleeping during this trip can make a big difference in your participation throughout the day. (Ma’s and Pa’s may need to remind others to remain quiet and sleep while traveling to Martin’s Cove.)
PHYSICAL FITNESS: Trek participants (youth and leaders) should be able to walk the distances which will be traveled on the trek. We will be walking 3 miles the first day, 7 miles the second day, and 3 miles the third day. This usually requires some conditioning/training prior to the trek. Inform Pres. Nielson by April 30th for anyone in your group who needs special assistance.
DIET: The trek experience is physically challenging. Trek participants need nutritious, well- balanced meals. Candy and junk food should not be brought by the youth nor the leaders. Chocolate candy is especially messy. We have been asked not to bring these items to Martin’s Cove because people tend to fill-up on these items instead of eating their meals, thus becoming sick and having other problems throughout the trek. We will have our meals and snacks provided by a food committee who will do the planning, cooking, and cleaning while we trek and do our other activities. Fasting during the trek is not recommended.
COMMUNICATION: Parents of youth and leaders’ families at home who have an emergency while we are trekking may contact a service missionary at Martin’s Cove. The phone number is 307-328-2953. The person calling should tell the service missionary their family member is with the Provo South Stake. Cell phone usage is very limited. Only AT&T and Union work there.
MEDICAL: There will be one or two medical personnel walking with us during the trek. They will have backpacks for carrying medicines and food for those who need these items. The other medical personnel will be in a vehicle (out-of-sight) following behind us. The car will be equipped with medical supplies for emergency situations. (Ma’s and Pa’s will need to bring the first-aid supplies for their group.) If someone needs medical assistance, the medical person walking with us will inform those in the vehicle to pick up the individual. The medical staff are people who reside within our stake boundaries. Martin’s Cove requires them to have one of the following credentials: EMT, LPN, RN, or MD.
JOURNALS WITH HYMNS: These will be provided for all the youth.
REGISTRATION AND MEDICAL FORMS: Everyone attending Martin’s Cove must submit these forms. No one is exempt from this requirement. Please give the completed forms to Janell Miller (435 S. 500 W.).
CLOTHING: We are required to be in pioneer clothing. The other stakes and service missionaries at Martin’s Cove will be in pioneer dress also. Come to the stake center Tuesday evening, June 7th, dressed in your pioneer clothing. We are to arrive at Martin’s Cove already dressed for the occasion!
